How to Care for Your Tile Bed (Drainfield)?

Your tile bed (drainfield) is an important component of your septic system. As your sewage enters the septic tank the sewage level rises causing clear liquid (effluent) to flow into your tile bed. In the tile bed, the soil introduces oxygen to the wastewater and removes bacteria, viruses and nutrients.

Here are a few ways to maintain your tile bed (drainfield):
  • Roots from trees or nearby plants might damage your tile bed so only plant grass over or near your septic tank system.
  • It's best to not drive over or park on your septic system as it can compact the soil, and damage the pipes or tank.
  • Have eavestroughs, basement sump pumps or other drainage systems kept away from the tile bed. As excess water can slow down or stop treatment causing backups.
  • Don't build anything on top of your septic system such as pools, pavement, decks, ice rink, etc...

Proper maintenance of your septic system's tile bed is crucial for the efficient treatment of household wastes. Avoid damaging roots, excess water, and heavy loads to ensure optimal performance.

I need to get a septic system installed in my new home. I had no idea it would require so much excavation to get implemented properly! It would definitely be a good idea for me to get a septic tank installed for this.

I didn't know that tree roots could cause problems for a septic system's drain field. There's a tree growing near mine, so I might need to get a professional to help me out with this. I can see how a septic tank specialist could help with this.

You made a good point when you discussed that roots from trees can affect our septic tank system. My friend told me that their commercial septic tank system needs to be pumped. I should advise him to hire an expert in commercial septic tank system pumping to prevent further damage.
